"I Want that Mountain!"

February 10, 2008

William Harvey captured the desire of Joshua, when he penned the hymn, "I Want That Mountain,"

"Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said." Joshua 14:12

Caleb was an eighty-five year old man with a vision! He was still looking ahead. He had not forgot God’s promises nor the promise of Moses forty-five years prior. Barely out of Egyptian captivity, Moses sent twelve spies, including Joshua and Caleb, into Kadeshbarnea to spy out the land. Ten of the spies were intimidated and afraid. They return with a faithless report. They told how lush and bountiful the land was but added that the inhabitants of the land were formidable. They were giants that could not be conquered and "we were in our own sight as grasshoppers."

Joshua and Caleb had another perspective. Listen to their response. "If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not." Numbers 14:8-9

As a result God promised Caleb that He would personally give him that land. Now forty-five years later, Caleb is ready to claim that promise. He still has no fear of the giants nor concern of his age or inability. He cries out "I Want That Mountain!.

+As we personally endeavor to Go Up to the Mountain, let is determine to have that same faith, zeal and ambition. Our God is bigger than all the giants that threaten us and He will keep His Word! Let us claim those Mountain Top Promises we find in Scripture with both hands and climb to the top together!
